A technical malfunction at Tower Bridge caused chaos in London traffic.

The bridge failed to close for technical reasons after it opened to launch a ship sailing on the Thames this afternoon, the BBC reported.

Tower Bridge remained open for more than an hour, leaving hundreds of people locked in vehicles in central London.

City of London police said engineers were called urgently to rectify the accident. It was again open to pedestrians, but motorists were urged to look for detours.

Traffic was blocked on both sides of the famous bridge.

A social media user wrote: "I've been sitting here for more than an hour, it's awful…", another added: "Yes, Tower Bridge is definitely rotten! One side started to go down, but the other didn't! ”

The bridge connects the financial district of London's Square Mile with the Southwark area.
