An earthquake has hit the Philippines, with casualties and severe damage.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook the central Philippines. At least one person has been killed and serious damage has been done to residential and other buildings in the city of Kataingan. Cracks appeared on the roads, BTA reports.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was registered at 8.03 local time. Its epicenter was 68 km from the town of Masbate, near the Visayas Islands. The epicenter was at a shallow depth of 10 km below the earth's surface.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the epicenter was located 7 km southeast of Katayngan, at a depth of 21 km.
