Tens of thousands were evacuated because of the fires in California.

Tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes in California, where some of the worst fires in the state's history are raging, world agencies report. At least five people have lost their lives in the disaster so far, according to Voice of America.

One of the fires destroyed nearly 90,000 hectares and threatened vineyards in Napa and Sonoma. Because of the risk of spreading the coronavirus, some evacuees sought refuge in parking lots and beaches instead of shelters provided by the authorities.

At the Democratic convention last week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom drew attention to the direct link between climate change and fires. Last Sunday, California reported the third highest temperature ever recorded on Earth - 54.4 degrees Celsius. It was measured in Death Valley.

In a week, the fires burned more than 312,000 hectares of plantations, and the smoke from the fire caused air pollution in the Gulf of San Francisco.
