Only two people survived and 25 people died in the crash of an An-26 military plane in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine late last night, authorities in Kiev said.

Two people who, according to eyewitnesses, jumped from the plane when it was at a low altitude, were seriously injured. The plane crashed while approaching the runway of the military airport in Chuguev, while trying to land during a training flight, said the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Gen. Ruslan Khomchak.

There were a total of 27 people on board - a seven-member crew and 20 cadets from the Air Force Academy. Initially, 28 people were reported, but then it became clear that one of the cadets did not show up for the training flight.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said he would visit the crash site today.

According to Oleksiy Kucher, head of the Kharkiv regional state administration, one of the pilots reported damage to the left engine of the twin-engine plane. The area of ​​the accident is located about 40 km from the Russian border, but is not in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine. The separatist republics of Luhansk and Donetsk are 250 km away from the crash site, the DPA said.
