Large-scale whaling rescue operation on the island of Tasmania.

About 70 whales are stranded in a bay on the Australian island of Tasmania, officials told AFP. Experts are currently preparing a rescue operation.

The huge animals are near the port of Macquarie, on the rugged and sparsely populated west coast of the island, where they are believed to be stranded in the shallows. Police are guarding the site and marine experts are assessing the situation, the Tasmanian Environment Department said.

"Additional crews with whale rescue equipment will arrive later today", the service said in a statement.

Stuck groups of large marine mammals occur relatively often off the coast of Tasmania, but their large numbers this time are a challenge for rescuers.
