Horror in Pakistan: Powerful explosion at school, 8 killed and 136 injured students.

A powerful bomb blast has erupted at an Islamic school on the outskirts of the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing at least eight students and injuring 136 others. Police say preliminary investigations suggest the bomb exploded minutes after the bag was left.

Several students are in critical condition. There are fears that the death toll could rise. According to authorities, teachers and staff at the madrassa (Islamic Theological Seminary) were among the injured.

The attack took place while a prominent religious scholar was lecturing on Islam in the main hall of the Zubayria Mosque, said police officer Vakar Azim. According to him, preliminary investigations show that the bomb exploded a few minutes after leaving the bag in the madrasa.

Television footage shows the damaged main hall of the seminary where the attack took place. The hall is littered with broken glass and the carpet is stained with blood. Police said at least 5kg of explosives were used in the attack.

Police initially said the bombings killed and injured schoolchildren, but later revised its report to inform that the students were in their mid-twenties. Many relatives gathered at Lady Reading City Hospital, where the dead and wounded students were taken away by ambulance and other vehicles.
