An enraged husband shot three French gendarmes and set fire to his house.

Three gendarmes were killed and a fourth was wounded in a shooting in the Puy-de-Dôme department in central France, French television BFM reported, citing prosecutors.

The information was confirmed by the national gendarmerie, Reuters reports. According to the television, the shooter is a 48-year-old man who quarreled with his wife over custody of the children.

The gendarmerie responded to a signal of domestic violence against a woman in a remote house in the area of ​​Clermont Ferrand, according to AFP, citing the regional prosecutor's office. Two were shot while trying to help a woman who was threatened by her husband on the roof of the house. One was shot and died, and the other was wounded in the thigh and taken to hospital by firefighters. After setting the house on fire, the enraged man fired again at the police and killed two more. The woman is safe.

There are at least seven members of the Special Forces on site. Maximum precautions have been taken as the man is dangerous, said a source close to the investigation.
