Police in New York shot dead an armed man in front of a church.

A gunman shouting "Kill me" opened fire on the stairs in front of St. John the Theologian Cathedral in New York after a Christmas concert by the church choir on Sunday afternoon. The man was killed by police, Reuters and the Associated Press reported.

No one else was injured in the shooting, thanks to the quick reaction of police officers at the scene, said at a press conference on Sunday, Commissioner Dermot Shea of the New York City Police.

The unidentified suspect was shot in the head at least once. He was taken to a hospital where his death was established. Commissioner Shea said police officers fired a total of 15 shots at the suspect.

Police found two semi-automatic weapons at the scene and a bag that appeared to have belonged to the shooter. A can of petrol, a rope, wire, several knives, a Bible and a sticker were found in it.

The incident happened just before 4 pm local time in front of St. John the Theologian Cathedral in Manhattan, which is the main church of the Episcopal Diocese in New York. The forty-five-minute concert had just ended, and people began to disperse when a series of shots were heard. About 200 people enjoyed the performance of the church choir, Reuters notes.

The cathedral's annual Christmas concert has been moved outside due to safety rules related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Commissioner Dermot Shea said there were only about 15 people there when the stairs in front of the cathedral began firing.

The man shot and shouted "Kill me", "Shoot me". Police ordered the man to drop his weapon several times before firing at him.
