A volcano on the island of Java erupted and threw gas and ash on its slopes.

The Semeru volcano in the Indonesian province of East Java today threw gas, ash and other materials four and a half kilometers down its slopes, the local disaster agency was quoted as saying by the DPA.

The level of danger from Semeru, the highest mountain on the island of Java, has increased by one degree, said agency spokeswoman Raditya Jati. According to him, no one was injured, but the population in the area was warned to remain vigilant.
